Editing Canvas Studio Videos
The things you can do in Canvas Studio…
Canvas Studio is a fantastic tool for creating webcam and screencast videos for your students. But you don’t have to aspire to be a “one-take-wonder”. There is plenty that you can do in the Studio post-production arena to enhance your videos, such as overlaying images, text, or arrows, hiding your webcam or mouse cursor, or highlight portions of the screen.
The timeline in the Studio editor interface is fairly simple to work with and intuitive as you tinker with your video to teach yourself the functionality and how to incorporate it into your production.
To use one of the Studio tools, click on the video timeline where you want to edit. In the pop up menu select the edit you want. Drag the colored portion along the timeline where you want the element and click OK. You can re-edit or remove the interaction before you publish your video.
The Studio Editor tools
Cut – Delete or cut portions of your video content.
Copy – Tool allows you to copy selected portions of your video. You can paste the copied portion anywhere on your timeline or choose another video.
Hide – You can choose to hide either your cursor or webcam on selected areas of your video.
Insert – There are several options to insert videos or recordings into your timeline.
New Recording – You can add a new recording on your timeline.
Existing Recording – You can insert an existing recording (from your recordings manager).
Pause – Put a pause in your video. You can determine the duration of your pause.
Video File – Insert an mp4 video into your project.
Paste Recording – Inserts the ‘copy’ (see Copy) into a selected location on your timeline.
Narrate – You can narrate over a portion of your video or the entire thing. After you open the narration tool, hit the record button to add your voiceover.
Overlay – Add images, blurs, text boxes, and other special effects to your videos.
Image – Insert an image on your video timeline. You can modify some of the properties, such as shadows, borders, and opacity (transparency).
Blur – You can blur a portion of your video. Adjust the opacity to determine how much of a blur you want.
Shape – Add a variety of shapes to your video, including basic shapes, lines, arrows, equation symbols, etc. You can adjust properties such as color, thickness, and shadows.
Arrow – Arrows are very useful in screencasts to emphasize parts of the screen.
Highlight – This is a powerful overlay that highlights a specific portion of your screen. Click on ‘Add Zoom’ for even more emphasis.
Text – You can put text overlays or text boxes anywhere on your screen. You can determine basic properties, such as font color, family, and size. You can also adjust the text box with shadows and opacity.
Paste – You can duplicate another overlay and paste it anywhere on your video timeline.
Video – Overlay a video clip and add it to your timeline. You can adjust the sound and video length.
Replace – You can replace portions of your video
Replace Video – Replace a portion of your video with a new recording. It will replace the existing video.
Freeze Video – You can freeze a frame or the mouse cursor by dragging the bar on the timeline.
Sound – Add music or sound effects to your video
Speed – You can change the speed of your video, either ‘Speed Up’ or Speed Down’ and choose the rate of speed.
Transition – You can choose from many transitions that allow you to animate movement onto your video.
Volume – Control the volume levels in your video or in sections of your video.
